Hospital Coder

Hi All, Getting prepared for full time out on the road. I'm hoping to use my accreditation as a In-patient and Out- Patient certified coder. Can anyone who is currently doing this point me in the right direction. My plan is to settle here on my property in Vermont for the good months, May through October. Then off to a warmer climate.

Thanks in advance for your help.
  • I work in IT for a large healthcare organization. Almost all of our coders are home based now, with multiple secured methods of accessing the applications needed to do their work. Home coding is the wave of the future in healthcare, pretty much every major healthcare system is now doing similar things to provide access for their home coders.

VPN is a software application that is installed on the owners computer which is then secure to the company network. ALL mayor corporation and businesses used this. It is highly secured and encrypted
  • Thanks for this thread. Will be following. DW finished her training and will take the cert exam next month. Goal is to Code from the road.

I'm not a coder and there could be some obscure requirement that I'm unaware of, but I wanted to add that you don't need a Wired connection to establish a VPN link.

I VPN in to work over wireless (Home, Starbucks...) all of the time. That's kind of the point of VPN - establish a secure channel over any ol' Internet connection.

    :)

  • The hospitals in AZ explode in the winter time with all of the snow birds. You might want to contact some of them to see if they hire on temp help in the winter to help with the influx of pts. I worked PRN as an RN in an emergency room from Nov to April. My choice of days and hours. They were glad to get help. All departments were the same. Call and speak to the department head to see if something temp is possible. Good Luck. Also many of the resorts have local hard wired internet available at their sites. There are options available to you. It is good to start the research now.

  • Some friends that "do that from home" have to have a secure hard (wired) connection that can be configured to handle the VPN setup to talk to the hospital system securely.
  • Robert,

Talk to some hospitals around you. Our large community hospital "sent the coders home" a couple of years ago (they're all coding remotely, in other words). Have you trained and certified on ICD-10? It's coming 10/01/2015.
