How many bars on your phone refers to signal strength while 3G vs. 4G has to do with data speed. You can buy signal boosters, though I can not personally vouch for how well they work or which might work better than another. I have a vz 4G droid razr as well as a 4G hotspot with 10G of data on a shared plan. But this is also what I use for home internet access so taking it with me on a trip is not a bother.
