Our blog, Geeky Nomads

I don't think this is against the rules, I just wanted to drop a line into the forum to let everyone know we started a travel blog. We are a 30 something couple with a toddler, dog and cat and have been full timing for 2 months now in our always problematic 1998 Winnebago Adventurer. We work in IT and I thought it'd be neat to start a blog and detailing the fun and problems we have. I'm eternally a geek so I thought it would be cool to install cameras on the motorhome and livestream our trips in real time. We also show current GPS location and some stats about our motorhome's engine health. I am working on building a timelapse video of a trip across the country and I'd like to get a go pro hero black to make an HD version for the trip back but that probably won't happen. Money and all ;)

But enjoy if you want to enjoy, http://www.geekynomads.com and the "roll with us" page is where our travels are livestreamed. We're currently in West Yellowstone and lately we've been driving on Mondays but we aim to drive on Sundays.

  • It sounds interesting for you. Many folks blog and this forum is actually just another form of it. Have fun but remember you should be recording your trips for your family's memories..unless your motive is actually sell a product.

Only part of life's adventure is about sharing and storing up memories but don't get so obsessive about keeping the camera on you forget to really see where you are. So often my hubby would say he missed the race by always looking through the camera lense/concentrating on what video was taken! There is so much more that just what the camera sees!

Do most of us need live streamed video taken from your rig going down the road when most of us have already been down that road many times? The answer is probably no for many folks. I'm sorry you are disappointed in lack of interest but maybe since we've seen it all maybe lots of folks may not want to see it all again! Yes it brings back good memories and makes us feel good that you have discovered what we did long ago. But, do it for you not for us...It makes me wonder if you are looking to market a product?
  • I hear you. I was doing so well at first but then life caught up with us, sick kid, sick dog, no income, etc. Once we got to Florida I kind of forgot about the blog but I have a lot of content, photos and videos to post. We're going to be heading out again soon so I want to make sure to at least catch up with all the content I already have. I am redoing the camera system. It is going to use a Canon camera and the PTP interface. I used to have CCTV surveillance cameras but man they were so unreliable. I was surprised how little interest the live views got but I figured out the primary reason was that we drove on saturday which was when other people weren't sitting on the computer. Oh well ;)
  • I dig the new old RV, Foretravel makes some fabulous motorhome!

I'll be taking a look at your blog, first glance, you need to post more ften than once every 2 months (not a slam, don't we all!)
  • I never saw this post before. I added this feature. I can see how that would be frustrating. The site has been a bit neglected but I am trying to get back on task with it.
  • Yer blog, I note does not have any direct navigation to move forward through articles, like most RV Blogs have, which makes it a bit clunky.
  • We've been meaning to post more geeky content and there is more content for sure especially regarding internet but we've had so much other stuff going on that those posts haven't made it out yet.
  • Interesting. In keeping with your title, how about sharing the more geeky particulars? For example, since you're in IT, details about your internet connection(s) and router would be very helpful.
  • I don't know if you have read much, but I think you will find out that a great many fulltimers have blogs, and have been doing them for YEARS. Just look at their signatures.
