pet sitters?

We are hitting the road for a year or so to see the lower 48. We have a medium size hound dog that wouldn't be allowed on public transportation and some national park trails. He's a good dog and we have left him in the rig for short periods. Go to the movies etc. What have others do when in an area where taking my fur buddy isn't welcome?
  • Dog Daycares are very helpful. We have two 9yr old labs that are fine by themselves....we also have a 10 month old Lab that loves his exercise!! So we have found daycares along the way, always look them up for reviews if you use them. Last one we used, our little guy came home totally exhausted...met another Lab his age and they did their best to wear each other out...they succeeded. That was one very quiet night!
I would hesitate to use dog walkers, mainly because I don't want to give my keys to someone I don't know.
    Enjoy your travels.
  • Some campgrounds in tourist areas have pet walkers. Another alternative is a doggy day care. We usually took our beagle to Pet Smart day care. She loved it.
  • That is one of the problems when RV'ing with dogs.

I'm thinking of starting a side job of pet sitting for RV'ers IN CG's where I am staying in Florida.:W

Been there done that while full timing and want to leave to site see and would appreciate someone looking after the dogs or plumb just sitting in my MH with them! Especially when the CG rules state no dogs left unattended in RV.

I think many RV'ers would really like a service like that.
  • We can leave our dog in the coach for at least 8 hours if necessary. We just make sure she gets a long walk before we go and has fresh water. When we know we'll be gone for several hours, we usually leave a cell number with a neighbor and ask them to call us if there's any problems. Our dog is used to it though, since she's lived in RV's with us for most of her 15 year life. At her age, mostly she just sleeps even when we're there. I have seen some RV parks that offer dog walking services though, and the staff may also know of a local kennel or vet that offers "doggie day care" for their guests.
