Pigeon holes?

It comes up now and then for someone to define, say, a lifestyle.

So with respect, I ask, why do we humans have a need to define everything and place it a a convenient pigeon hole?

Do we find comfort in that?

What is the purpose?

I'm sure that the members here are much smarter than I, so what do you say?

Lifestyle: A chosen way to live one's life.

Humans need to define things and then place those things, have evolved from MINE, to OURS, to THEIRS.

We started as cavemen finding meat for me. Caveman found cavewoman, now meat is for us. One plus one sometimes equals three, so now we have meat to share with others. Once given away it is now theirs.

The comfort is a basic need to belong, be in order, and be part of. In any given society we must have some sort of order. To have things in order, we need to organize our things, thus we place things in pigeon holes.

I am not smarter than thou. I only see food differently and place things in different pigeon holes!

Best answewr yet. For society to function we must have order. Order requires organization. Organization requires "piegon holes."

Really rather simple when looking at it from that angle, isn't it?

  • and after they put people into categories, they then trash them for their own ideas and way of life :) :)

rv'ing, huh, who does that?! What a miserable way to spend vacation! etc. etc. etc. and the list goes on :)
  • It started with "predator/prey" labels, then moved to "edible/inedible," then to "friend/foe." Survival instinct. Over time, it morphed into categorizing everything to make the complex world easier to deal with.

People have a list of definitions for every category. Most people assume they can learn something about someone by putting them in categories. This is how stereotypes evolve. Both amusing and sad at the same time.

I think 'pigeon-holing' people says more about the person doing the defining than it does about the person 'defined.'
  • Irony? Hardly.

Humans, much as we like do be dismissive about it, are herd animals. Nothing more complex than that.
  • Is your posting of this thread in the General RVing pigeonhole instead of in the Around the Campfire pigeonhole intended to be as ironic as it comes across to me? ;)
  • Flying rats
But seriously, for the mental safety aspect and being programmed by society.
  • We as a species classify things so that we can process information.
