I look at the website for the communities nearby where our route takes us. Most of the city websites list places of interest along with a history of the city/area. If I see something that would interest both of us, we make a side trip for a day or overnight stop.

Here's an example, while staying in Quartzite for a month I discovered Oatman, AZ was nearby. It's an old mining town now tourist destination. Besides gold, it's claim to fame- it is the town where Clark Gable & Carole Lombard Honeymooned.
