If it's any help, consider that crime closely follows population density, high density ie; city, high crime, low density, lower crime.
It's not 100% accurate, but in general it's the norm.
The greater the number of people in an area, the greater the chance of a miscreant being there.
I understand your concern, I've lived in enough cities to have had to deal with the problems, but now I have had 8 years in the middle of nowhere, and I find I'm much more relaxed than I was in the past.
