I have always done the majority of the necessary repairs myself, but over the years we have had a few "big ticket" repairs that required a shop visit. Back in our Class C days, we blew an engine in Virginia that held us up for about a week while a rebuilt one was installed. Then in a Class A a few years later, we dropped a transmission in Kentucky, necessitating shipping in a remanned tranny that tied us up for about 5 days. The last Class A major failure was a failed rear end in southern NY that required shipping in a used unit from a salvage yard in Missouri. In every case though, we never missed a night sleeping in the RV. For the engine replacement, they rolled the rig in and out as needed, leaving it outside at night near an outlet for power. The tranny was ordered the day we were towed in, and the shop then towed us to a nearby campground to wait for it to arrive. Then we were towed back to the shop and the removal and replacement was completed in one day, and we were back on the road the following morning. The rear end replacement was similar, except that we were towed into a campground in the first place after the initial evaluation was done with the coach lifted by the tow truck. Once the replacement was on hand, we were towed to the shop and the work was completed the same day. In the past 10 years, the only time we left a coach for a couple of days in a KOA "Kottage" was when we had some exterior paint work done, and didn't want to put up with the smell.
