Since you're from California you might look at Yuma AZ. I've never stayed in Yuma (not a fan of desert areas) but there are some extremely inexpensive parks there. I've been wintering in Sierra Vista AZ and really like it there for many reasons but I suppose it's not for everyone. SV at 4,600' does get very occasional snow and a few sub-freezing nights. However, the adjacent 9,900' mountains as well as the areas outdoor activities more than make up for occasional light snow and cold. Besides I'm not really a snowbird, I like the snow but hate the long dreary northern winter days and the resulting winter depression I get. Southern AZ is sunny all winter, perfect for this sunbird!
