Based n our 9 monthss of FTing, I'd say that if you are like us and plan to travel, see the sights, and do the things available in the areas you go, you'll be hard pressed to do it on $3k a month. We're not extravagant, but we do hit the highlights in the cities we've been to. This includes museums, local attractions , etc.. Plus eating at some of the recommended eateries. By the time we've done that, paid for diesel, and routine expenses, it takes us much more than what you proposed.
With that said, I'd still suggest you jump into it, then if you need to pare the tripes down a little you can. Staying somewhere a week rather than 2 nights, or a month rather than 2 weeks, can save you a lot. If you are strategic about where you stay, you may be able to use it as a home base for a month and do day trips to Lot of places you might have spent he night and paid more.
Based on our first almost year, we see doing this for 5 or more years, or until we find the place we fall in love with to buy our retirement digs. Best of luck.
