The costs of a full year van-dwelling

I have tracked my van-dwelling expenses for one full year now, mostly as an experiment to see where the money really goes in my style of van-dwelling. While other van-dwellers tend to stay put for long periods of time. I usually put down a lot of miles of traveling and exploring which has it’s own unique monthly footprint. In 2013, both styles of van life show themselves over the course of my finance tracking. Not every penny I spent is shown in my experiment. I filtered out money that I send home to my family, put away in savings, and other things that had no real importance on the overall figures of van-dwelling. I wanted to show as much of my personal expenses as possible, but I felt that the addition of big-ticket items that were specific only to myself would not benefit the overall experiment.

In the spreadsheet I detail each month, quarter, and the total year-end expenses. I also track the average-cost-per-day for each item, which was quite startling at first, but became a fun challenge to try to keep my daily costs under $30 per day... Read more on my blog

  • Agreed it would be trespassing if it were private property. I'm not advising any illegal activities.

To be more clear, I am not talking about private property but public property (road-side construction, parks, etc). Drive down a public road for an hour and you will pass numerous porta-johns along the way, paid for by our public tax dollars.

I'd prefer not to have to defend every word I say in this thread, so please feel free to simply ignore any comment I say that you may not agree with.

Wouldn't that be considered trespassing on a construction site? I'm also fairly certain that the construction company has to pay to have their porta-johns emptied.

Frugal is great, illegal is something else entirely.
  • I do mostly boondocked ($0 per night) to save the cost of campgrounds and RV parks. I find that I really do not need to pay to camp as long as my solar panels get to see the sun once every other day or so. Since I am not a full RV, I can take on water by refilling my 7gal jugs. I also have no tanks, only a porta-potty, which is easy to dump in public restrooms or porta-john at construction sights or rest areas.

I became a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose ($70 a year) and spent many nights camping at their lodges around the country. Most will allow members to overnight in their lots for free or, if you need power and a longer stay, a small donation ($50 a week) will do the trick. Some even have RV hookups (no dump). I stayed at one in Montana for 3 weeks while visiting Glacier Ntnl Park, but mostly only stayed for a few nights at each to see the nearby attractions. There are more than 2500 Moose Lodges in the USA.
  • We certainly eat more than that. Well heck we do everything more than that. Yes you are frugal.
  • Camping for $55/month? That is the cost of only one night in a very popular/fancy park. How do you shower, take on water, and dump your black tanks?
  • Wow, you were very frugal! I just got finished reading Bob Wells book How to Live in a Car, Van or RV. It has me thinking about full timing in my rig when I retire in a few years.
