Water Hose Gaskets That Last Longer Than 15 Minutes

I think the title says it all. I full time and I have never found a gasket that lasts any length of time in full time use. My main white water hose has been in use since August 2010 and it is still going strong, but I couldn't even count the number of gaskets I have put is it and others.

Any suggestions of a source? I know they are cheap, but drips drive me crazy.

  • I use O-Ring washers that I buy at Home Depot. $1.19 for a combo pack that unfortunately forces me to buy o-rings and standard washers, but for a buck I can throw the standard ones away. These work so much better and won't leak!

  • Look at the hose ends. I believe you will find that the interior of the connectors are very sharp. I would look at buying some brass adapters for the hose. The brass adapters are flat and allow the washers to lay flat rather then get damaged by the hose connectors. The brass adapters are available at Ace. They are not really "adapters but conversion units.
  • We're fulltime for nearly 14 years. I actually replace those washers less often than every 4 years and I buy the cheapest ones I can find.

Contrary to the above post, my guess is that you are OVER tightening. Hand tightening should be all that's necessary. If you use a wrench, you're probably warping the washer and the next time you hook up, it will likely leak.
  • Could be the hose fitting and not the gasket. I have never replaced a hose gasket due to leakage but have replaced them because they fell out. Are you sure you are tightening enough?
