Try IKEA.. they have various solutions ie slats etc which you could make your own.

Plywood with bunch of holes for ventilation,works great..as long as air can circulate under it you should have no problems.

I have read about others that had mildew/mold issues under a mattress. In all cases, it was a memory foam mattress on top of the plywood. If you buy a memory foam mattress for your home, there is aways a base or boxspring of some type under it that allows air to circulate/penetrate to keep things dry. We have a standard mattress with a 3" memory foam topper and the mattress allows air circulation so we have not ever had a problem (3 years so far). Your body gives off moisture on a continuous basis.

I never thought about moisture problems as far as the mattress is concerned. Ours is just on the plywood. When we were in Penscola last summer, the humidity was so bad we had water running down the walls in the bathroom. I guess its a good thing I didn't think to check the mattress!

If you are in AZ and will remain there all winter there is probably no need for a dehumidifier instead you may need a humidifier. The best way to know if have a humidistat so you know how dry it is. But your hair standing on end will let you know:E We found in a dry climate if the furnace runs at all...the humidity can drop below 20% and be very difficult to keep it in the more desirable 30% range.

Now if you are in Florida...have that handy humidistat going and buy a dehumidifier if things get too damp.

I'd lay an old blanket under the mattress if you are worried about damaging the mattress but I doubt it will be damaged unless you got splinters in it.If you will be flipping it top to bottom I'd certainly add protection. In fact I'd staple on light duty carpeting or a blanket.

I also took out the mattress which came with my RV. I have plywood under my mattress, but I have a Queen-size adjustable air mattress, similar to a Sleep Number Bed but less expensive. It has the wand where you can adjust the firmness, etc. I like it a lot. There are a lot of them on the market that are just as good as the Sleep Number Bed but not as expensive.
