Yes, grey tank is always open, this is not a problem.
Just put a U in the sewer line hose. Very easy to do. That will stop any gasses getting back into the RV.
Leave gray open until 2 days before emptying the black.
I only need to dump my 40 gal black tank every 14 days. If not full by then I just add more water before dumping.
I have a reminder in PC calendar when to close gray and dump black.
