. . . where to start finding campgrounds to look at and their rates for staying several months. We would probably be interested in Florida and/or the southwest US for winter and states such as Wyoming, Montana for summer. I think we would need to look at rates in the $300-$500/Mo. range rather than $1000 range.
Previous posters listed some general places to look. I'll give you a couple of specifics in your price range . . .
First, I found several campgrounds I liked by Virtual RVing -- that is, by planning an extended RV trip that I never really took. It was good research on campgrounds & campground prices.
Anyway, the Southwest (Arizona in particular) turned out to have generally lower extended stay costs than other alternatives I looked at (Texas gulf coast and Florida). Results may vary of course.
I ended up at Crazy Horse Campground right on the Colorado River in Lake Havasu City for $370/month + electric (about $50). We also stayed at another campground in Fort Mohave for $345/mon which included electricity.
For the summer, we had planned on staying at a campground on the Mississippi River in WI for $1350 (+ electric) for a 6-month season so that's $225/month.
