Which Mail Service

I will be full timing starting 1 Jan 2014 so I need to pick a mail forwarding service pretty quick. I intend to retain my Florida residency, so I'm looking at either the service provided by Good Sam, which is really MyRVMail.com out of Crestview, or using St Brendan's Isle in Green Cove Springs.

I'd appreciate any comments about either of them, pro or con; also how does mail forwarding work out for you ? Do you just have your mail forwarded to general delivery at the local post office ? Seems like a lot of campgrounds will not accept mail. Do you actually get all your mail or does some of it get lost in transit ?

Do you use the basic cheaper plan or is it worth it to get the more expensive plan ? I also see that there are sometimes 'add-on' packages but don't know if they are of any value.

What about packages ? Does that work the same way ? Just have them sent to the local post office ?

Are there any other good choices in Florida besides the 2 I've named above ?

I guess I'm asking you how this mail forwarding process really works out. Any words of wisdom ?

Thanks very much.

Tim
  • We have used SBI for six years now and have never had a problem. They handle our mail in an excellent manner. We also subscribe to the scan service and that way we only have our mail sent to us about once a month as we can have them scan contents of a potential important mail and see if we really need it sent to us. The scans are also PDF files so you can save them on your computer and use them as if they are the originals.

I don't see how anyone can beat their service if you want a FL residence!

As far as packages go, we usually have the company we order from ship it to a future campground or even General Delivery if you can specify how it is shipped. I have even had UPS deliver to a USPS GD address on occasion! We also have an Amazon Prime account so items we order form Amazon are shipped 2-day delivery and that has worked well. Our medicine is another story as it is shipped to SBI by Express Scripts (they don't like constantly changing addresses) and then SBI ships it to us when we ask them ship our mail.
  • We also use SD for our mail. They will send it wherever you tell them to. Usually we have it sent to a local Post Office C/O General Delivery. If we are going to be at a campground that accepts mail delivery, we've had it sent there too. Depends on how long you're going to be in one spot. Since we move frequently, we've found the GD route more convenient for us..don't forget to change everything over, drivers license, voter reg, bank statements etc. ..Dennis
  • We have used St, Brendan's in Green Cove Springs, FL, for the last 3 years.
    Excellent service.
We got our residency for Florida with them, including our DLs and license plates for the truck and trailer. No problems.
    Highly recommend them.
We got the service where they will scan the envelopes for us, post them on line, and if we really need to, they will open and scan the contents for us. We normally use their priority mail. They put it all in a box, and US mail it. It gets to us in 2-3 business days. We send it to a campground we are going to be at in about 2-3 days. We've never had any problems with lost mail or campgrounds refusing to accept mail for us, but we phone the campground first to make sure they'll accept it. With a reservation, nobody's refused yet.

  • Yes, whichever service I choose will be my residence address. That is why I do not want just a P.O box number.

tkcas01 - If you did not have your mail sent to general delivery, where did you have it sent to ?
  • check www.myrvmail.com in Crestview FL. They will assist you. They have different plans depending on the level of service you want. We used them for awhile until we had a permanent FL address. Very good customer service.
  • You can have a residence address and a mailing address. Are you looking for a company that can simply forward your mail or are you trying to find somewhere you can use as your residence address as well.
  • I would check them all. Even local private mail box services forward. GS? I am a GS member but knowing how slow they are I would be inclined to pick a local private p.o.. box service. We have a p.o. box in Cody WY. They forward our mail and small enough that I can talk to them on the phone and it is more personal. They will sort through our mail for us. Really more personalized service. Talk to your local private mail box people first. JMHO
  • Also realize that vehicle insurance rates are based on zip code, so you may want to contact the company that covers both your RV and any other vehicle and understand coverage based on the zip code that will become your mailing address when you pick a forwarding company.

But to answer your other questions - I use a service out of South Dakota and things getting "lost in transit" is not really an issue. They do not forward items one by one typically, but save it up and send to you in a package based on the timing and location you specify.

In 8 years of full-timing, I think I have only had to have it send to the local PO "general delivery" once.

The forwarding companies offer different levels of service. Some will open and scan your mail so you can see it online. I don't care for that, but chose the option to NOT get junk mail - like circulars and bulk mail. I just get things actually addressed to me. Personally, I can go 3-4 weeks before getting my mail forwarded. Most things are done online and snail mail is almost of no use to me.
