10 percent cancellation fee!!!!

Hi everyone. I am a Good Sam life member and a full time RVer. I decided to write this to inform other Good Sam members about my bad experience with GMAC/NGI's poor customer service, high rates, and their 10% charge on remaining premium for cancelling. I started our full timer insurance with what used to be called GMAC in Mar of 2010. Very difficult to deal with customer service from the beginning. Several reps kept telling me that I had an accident and my rates would be higher because of this. I had no accidents on my records but they insisted that I check with DMV about it. I checked, nothing as thought. I figured on my own that they were talking about a claim I filed with my then insurance company about a blown tire that caused damage to the 5'er. I remember it was also difficult to prove to them that I was a life member of Good Sam. Anyway I got out of bed on the wrong side, overlooked these stress points and changed over to GMAC. All was well for 2 years. No claims submitted, paid the high premiums on time, had no traffic tickets, and did not have to deal with customer service. Then on the renewal of the third year the premium went up 540 dollars. I was told the reason why was because I was a Florida resident. I travel all the time. I have spent 4 months in the last 3 years there. I told them they needed to lower my rate by at least 1000 dollars or I would go somewhere else. They couldn't. I told them I would use them for 1 month while I found someone else. My new insurance was 1,400 dollars cheaper and still geared for full timers. I dropped GMAC like a hot horseshoe May 15, 2013. Then Jan 15, 2014(that's 8 months later) National General insurance sends me a final bill for last days used and a 10% charge of the remaining premium. Previous notices must of got lost and my phone wasn't working - ya right! I told them I wanted to see in my policy where they charge the 10% fee. The best they could come up with was "it was in their manuals to do so." I told them I was not going to pay this bill. I asked my current insurance if they did this and they told me I only get charged for days used. Since then NGI sent the bill to a collection agency with warnings of lowering my credit score. A whole new chapter. I would only recommend National General to my enemies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Not insurance related but we had ADT security alarm system here at the S&B. I called them 5 days before my monthly automatic payment and told them to cancel my security programming effective the day I called. They informed me that it took 30 days to cancel and that I would still owe the next months payment. Well they didn't do the Auto Deduct but 6 days later I received a paper will for the next 30 days of service, which I promptly threw in the trash. I called and canceled the service before the due date of the next payment, and will be dammed if i'll pay for the next months service because they say I have to.
  • Cancellation fees vary from company to company- and even from State to State within the same company, as is evidently the case in your situation. A percentage charge isn't unusual. Easy to find out about in the shopping phase. Here's a link to a general list that's been around for several years- good starting point. (List predates GMAC's name change to National General, but does indicate that cancellation fees vary from state to state. Good thing to look into before buying in a particular State!)

Also, in my case at least cancellation charge policies are clearly stated on the policy itself. (I'm with Safeco)
  • I do not know about your case but I'm finding fees everywhere I go for this or that of late.

  • I like it when some company tells me it's their "policy" to do something. I go on to explain what "our policy" is and how we only follow it.

I agree it's a rip off to charge the 10%. I've never been charged anything like that.
