TT can be a good deal, if you use it. Keep in mind that alot of the disparaging remarks are from people that don't have a membership (but heard from a friends wife who had a pool boy, that heard from an uncle, that....etc etc). As has been mentioned there are numerous contracts out there so be aware of what you are buying.
There haven't been "lifetime memberships" for a long time. Most courts have declared them illegal. We bought our membership 10 years ago, at the time we had to keep our membership for three years. After the three years you could do whatever you wanted with it, including just letting it go.
We live in Oregon and use the TT parks almost exclusively. I can get in a park on short notice over holiday weekends. Even if they don't have site with hookups they have overflow (no hookups) and at least you are off the road and a safe place to stay.
As mentioned if you buy a resale check with TT as to just what you are getting. Some contracts have very low annual maintenance fees...until it is resold and then fees go immediately to the current going rate.
Yes, lots of resales are available. Not all because people are dissatisfied but because for whatever reason (age, health, etc) they no longer use the parks. Yes, there are dissatisfied members but we have talked with many more that like the membership than those that don't.
Good luck with your research.
