DIY Built RV Insurance

Hi, I am new to the RV world and to this forum. My wife and I are getting to that point in life where it is time to do things for us, one of which is motorcycling and the other is doing it via an RV.

We are looking into building our own RV either based on a Ford E450 14 seat shuttle bus or a Sprinter freight hauler.

Before we get in to pros and cons of either option I would like to know how and if these options can be insured as an RV. If so what are the details and links I need to further investigate? Titling the vehicle as an RV in Colorado is not an issue.

Our internet searches have not provide much solid info on this topic. So this for us is a buyer/builder beware situation.

Thanks much.

  • Liability insurance should be no problem and you can probably get full coverage based on the value of the chassis. Covering the value of the conversion will be very difficult and likely expensive. You will likely need "agreed value" coverage which will require a professional appraisal and is usually much more expensive, dollar for dollar of coverage, than traditional comprehensive insurance. They may still turn you down because the risk of things like fire damage will skyrocket, in the eyes of the insurer, when wiring, ventilation and the like is installed by amateurs.
