It is a common practice for most businesses that offer a discount for extended purchases. You got a discount over the annual renewal by buying three years. If you got a pro-rated refund for cancelling, people would game the system.
Good Sam currently offers a one year membership for $29.00 and a three year for $79.00 Plus if you buy the three year you get a $30.00 merchandise certificate. That makes the three year average rate a savings of $2.67 a year over the yearly. Pro-rating a refund on that three years down to two and you are looking at $26.33 for the remaining year you aren't using. But, since you got a three year discount, it would only be fair that they removed that discount and charged the yearly rate for the years you had the membership so you have to deduct $5.34 from the refund. That takes it down to $20.99. However you also have to account for the $30.00 merchandise certificate you got for the three year commitment and that actually puts you $9.01 in the hole to them. So you really wouldn't be due a refund after all.
