Insurance company's rebate and pay you for the unexpired portion of the policy, not hit you with penalty.
They most certainly can hit you with a penalty if they meet certain conditions which you agreed to, are legal in the eyes of your state of residence, and vary from state to state, so comments on forums are mostly useless to the OP.
I would bet its disclosed somewhere on the online application, and its all legal in the OP's state of residence.
A company as big as National General Insurance does not go around willy nilly when it comes to what they can do or not do. They have huge legal departments. An insurance company is essentially nothing but a huge legal department.
OP......call or email your states Insurance regulation agency, whatever it may be called.
This is a well thought out response; however, it is based on the premise that insurance companies always do right and have researched everything first to be sure legality. As an attorney, I can tell you that is wishful thinking at best.
I can agree with that counselor, but seeing the OP is in CA, and being willing to bet National General insures quite a few people in CA, in this case they know exactly what they are doing and its legality. Not exactly the same as them trying to slide in some aftermarket parts on a collision repair when the policy states OEM. In hindsight...maybe it is lol
I have mixed feelings about your profession as my career, commercial construction project management, has slowly evolved into having to deal with you more than I deal with actually building something or the people involved in the hands on. I hope I can retire out of this **** someday lol.
