Extremely disappointed

Recently bought a new RV trailer and was recommended to use Good Sam, bought a policy online and planned to move my vehicles over as well. I got a quote from Good Sam that seemed high at around 3000 per year. So I priced shopped and AAA came in at less than half with more coverage. I canceled with Good Sam and switched. National General (Good Sam) called me today telling me I now owe the 175.00 for early termination. My biggest problem with this is that I purchased the policy online, they took my card number and mailed me the policy. No mention of an early termination penalty was ever mentioned, not one word. Who does that kind of stuff? It was bad enough that their prices were more expensive then everyone else, but this is just bad business.

Insurance company's rebate and pay you for the unexpired portion of the policy, not hit you with penalty.

They most certainly can hit you with a penalty if they meet certain conditions which you agreed to, are legal in the eyes of your state of residence, and vary from state to state, so comments on forums are mostly useless to the OP.

I would bet its disclosed somewhere on the online application, and its all legal in the OP's state of residence.

A company as big as National General Insurance does not go around willy nilly when it comes to what they can do or not do. They have huge legal departments. An insurance company is essentially nothing but a huge legal department.

OP......call or email your states Insurance regulation agency, whatever it may be called.
  • So you have no problem risking your CREDIT SCORE for $175. Sounds CRAZY to me but WHAT DO I KNOW ?

So, no where in the "policy" information that is available online do they mention an early termination fee? I wouldn't be surprised if it is buried somewhere on the internet.
  • I haven't paid it. They said I need to pay it immediately or they will send it to collections.
  • Ask them which specific part of the contact does it state that early termination fee is stated.

Insurance company's rebate and pay you for the unexpired portion of the policy, not hit you with penalty.
  • Don't pay it and if they thief it from your card, dispute it. If it isn't in righting then they have no right to it.

Paying with a CC gives you some insurance. You can formally contest this with your CC company to insure that the $175 is not retained.
