Flying J Ripoff

As one of the "benefits" of membership, I obtained a Flying J card that is supposed to give me a substantial discount on fuel. On Friday we went to the Ellensburg WA truck stop. I inserted the card, gave my pin, and filled up. I asked for a receipt and learned I didn't get the discount because I paid at the pump. No indication I shouldn't. I ended up paying $4.19/gal while only a mile or so away I could have paid $3.93.

I tried again in Spokane. I went to the office first. This time I was told because my rig wasn't with us (it was at the RV park. We like to fill up prior to hitching), the discount didn't apply. Furthermore, they told me the card would be discontinued in December. The price again was $4.19 vs $3.93 elsewhere. We left only adding enough fuel to go to a non-ripoff gas station.

Good Sam is who I blame. While it is nice that the Camping World / Good Sam team made a deal with Flying J, it turns out that Flying J does its best to overcharge RV customers. Based on the difference in price, my Good Sam "discount" has cost me more than $10 in extra fuel charges.

My RV PLUS card works great.... swipe, enter pin #, look and see that the price has dropped on pump, fill up, get receipt and go.. Last fill up $3.19 gal.

Same here...My RV Plus card works every time with its 7 cents off and my swipe and save card works with 3 cents off. But I wouldn't call them "substantial" savings. When you put your card in and give the pin, it should automatically reset the price on the pump. If you don't see it change, then don't pump. Go inside and inquire. Not saying that all the Flying J/Pilots work flawlessly, but I've used my cards at about 10 or so of them and they all work as they should. But again, pay attention to what your doing....

As far as other stations being cheaper, when we get off at an exit with a Flying J, we look around to see if there are any other stations that will be cheaper after our discount and that they are also an easy in and out with an RV and right there. None of been cheaper and given the fact of the RV lanes and it being easier there, the small savings is really insignificant.
  • Flying J/Pilot executives are a bunch of crooks. They just cut a deal with the feds to avoid criminal prosecution.

All RVers should never spend a dime at any Flying J/Pilot location.

  • Pilot in my area is always the same or lower than other stations. I use the charge card and has always been less than anyone else in the area!!!
  • Check www.gasbuddy.com for diesel prices in the area where you want to purchase fuel. The EXXON station on 1600 S Canyon road in Ellensburg, WA area is selling diesel for $3.89/gallon. It would take one heck of a discount to make up the 30 cent difference in price.

We used to use FlyingJ however for the past 3-5 years they seem to be one of the higher places for fuel. Now we shop around and avoid FlyinJ unless they are the only place in the area to get fuel.
  • We've always found that the discount wasn't enough to offset the higher cost of FJ fuel.
Still, it sounds like you were ripped off twice on a technicality. Bad show GS.
