GOOD ADVICE FROM GOOD SAM CHAPTER MEMBERS

As many of you know, TRAILER LIFE has a monthly column titled "RV Clinic" which answers questions from readers regarding tow vehicle and trailer issues. For the most part the answers are "spot on" and very informative. However many times the answers tend to be generic because the person asking the question fails to be specific about the year, make & model of their rig. Then there is the issue with the time delay in receiving an answer, given mail and publication dates.

I have been an active member and officer of a Good Sam Chapter for a number of years and have found that not only does the advice and counsel given by fellow members (although not recognized experts") is also "spot on" because they have all "been there done that" at one time or another and have resolved many of the same issues brought up in TRAILER LIFE. The added benefits of this forum is that opens up two way communication, the response to rig issues is immediate and many times "hands on".

This post was not intended to be a put down of an excellent feature in a very good publication, but to promote Chapter Membership which provides an opportunity to share our love of camping with good friends, learn about new and exciting places to camp, things to do when you get there, and pick the brains of other experienced campers regarding technical issues.

So find a local chapter and get involved.

  • It may be helpful if more of the chapters would respond to emails. Not saying they are all like, but I know a few years ago I started inquiring with some local chapters. I heard back from one within a few days. One it took a few months for them to reply because of their health issues. And another never responded back.

The one that did respond fairly timely was very firendly and sounded like they had a group of various ages. They did invite us to go to a group campout, but the timing and location was not good for us. We already had plans for that summer and when they planned to camp didn't coincide for us.

The one that responded back after a long while (health issues) describe their group as a lot older than us. No kids in the group. Which wouldn't work for us as we have one.

To me, there should be more than one person involved in answering the emails. Especially when you have an older group running things. The chance of health issues coming into play will be more common with an older group. Perhaps an alternate that can join in occasionally. This group also did the same campout at the same place. Their big thing to do was to go to a seafood restaurant out in the boonies for dinner. No offense, but they might of should thrown bingo into the mixture.

I think for the Club (chapters) to be successful, they need to involve and attract the younger crowd.

Camping World is finally starting to market to younger and hip crowd with their videos. Video 1 and Video 2.

Camping and RVing doesn't have to be your daddy's camping and RVing. You don't have to wait to retire to own an RV. But unfortunately most everything that has to do with it, has been driven towards that crowd. Today is different. Younger and younger people are finally figuring out that they can. Many of them are even able to do it fulltime.
  • I don't classify us as Club type people. WE all belong to a Chapter of the Club which is the National group of GOOD SAM. We get together and camp, and enjoy each others company. We do projects that we donate to a worthy cause and raise money if we have a source to do so, and donate that to help a needy causes. We are non-profit, and we are RV orientated. One of our new members wondered what a bunch of old people got out of there association. She came and attended a couple of our camp outs, She could not believe old people our age could have so much fun.
She joined our ranks and has as much fun as the rest of us. She is half our age.
Thanks to the OP and the follow up as we need more positive posting for people to come and join our ranks in the chapters that make up the 1 1/2 million members that belong to the Good Sam organization. we have room for more.
COME JOIN US TO SEE WHAT YOU ARE MISSING. Join a chapter.
  • A Men to what Miles Away said. We need more members to get involved with a Good Sam chapter in your area. Any body in the Upper Cumberland area wanting more info PM me and I will get back to you.
  • Your comments cover an important point, especially when a newbie requests information. In our attempt to keep our lives private most new members leave out information like location, type of RV, and family size. Thus, when an old times wants to help the response can only be of the most generic nature.
Some of us are just not "club type people" but still a more complete question will gain a better answer.
