Add google earth to your search toolbox We have also found the Good Sam ratings/ reviews fair and accurate, the satellite and street view shows what is around.
Unmoderated review sites allow the kooks. The unhappy always review, the happy do not always, they keep their favorite places to camp to themselves, sometimes even write poor reviews of it in attempt to lower occupancy so its not so busy.
We only give credence to review sites that require membership and a track record of experience. Beware of reviewers without membership, few reviews. Oft times they are venting.
I find Google maps that many mentioned here seems to work well too.
I find that if you can read between the lines in some of the negative reviews they usually can be "weeded out". I also find I look at the dates when left and how current reviews are if any, and you can tell a pattern of when things change for better or worse.
We never leave ratings(good or bad) only because we never used the Good Sam sites or anything. We camped locally for the most part and know which CG's are worth repeating.
But since we started looking into a trip into the Western area of the US, the Good Sam site has been invaluable. So we will make it a point to rate CG's no matter where we say.
