GSRA Automatic Renewal??

I've had GSRA for a few years now - I think since 2015. My present coverage is good until late June this year. I've kept it up because we've been taking long trips each year. But we're not sure if we will be travelling more than a few hundred km from home this year so we've been pondering whether to renew RA or not (new truck and trailer in 2016).

Yesterday I received an email from GSRA with the subject: Please update your account information

The email then states:
"For your convenience, you have elected to be enrolled in Automatic Renewal...

Per your request, we will charge your credit card on file for annual dues prior to your membership expiry date..."

Then says to call a number to update CC information.

I don't recall ever having agreed to "Automatic Renewal" and haven't given any permission to charge my CC. I certainly didn't do it knowlingly. The email doesn't even tell me when or how much will be charged.

I'm concerned about this seemingly blanket carte blanche GSRA feels they have to charge me whether I want to renew or not (I haven't decided yet but this is making me want to cancel for sure).

I assume others have received the same cookie-cutter email. What have you done about it? How do you feel about it?
  • Hello,

  • Use a "one-time" credit card. Citi, Bank of America and Capital One offer the ability to create a one-time or limited use virtual cc when you have their normal visa or mastercard. Use the virtual card to charge the purchase and set the expiration for less than the year period or whatever the renewal time is and they won't be able to renew when the time comes.

You have to call Good Sams and tell them to take you off automatic renewal. I really don't like any company or service that does automatic renewals with out my consent or email notification.

What sucks even more are the companies that allow you to sign up for something with an auto renewal online, but to cancel the service you have to call, remain on hold for 20 minutes, and then sit through the sales pitch to as why you should not cancel the service. SiruisXM comes to mind.

  • I could understand if I received an email from them saying my renewal was due on DATE, the cost is $XX, and that if I did not advise otherwise my account would be billed that amount on the renewal date. What I received doesn't give me any of this info. I don't know if they intend to bill me now or at the end of June and have no idea if it's for $50 or $500. I sent an email to GSRA via their website but haven't yet received a reply.
  • I always use "auto Pay" to avoid getting in to a "break down" situation while on the road and then discover that I had forgot to renew my Emergency Road Side Service.
  • Hello Krow,

Thank you for your post. This letter goes out to our members that are signed up on auto renew to ensure that we have updated credit card information on file to make sure the membership does not lapse in coverage to keep you safe on the road after the expiration date passes.

Please send a PM if you have any additional questions.

    Thanks,

    David
