GS ERS offered to tow him since he ran out of fuel. Sounds like he was offered more than he paid for. Ask any GM, Ford, or Dodge garage what the most common tow in for a diesel is, old clogged fuel filter, followed by system will not prime. My guess had they sent fuel, and then not be able to prime, or it has a clogged filter we would be reading about how GS ERS did not tow him.
I have been lucky, never run out of diesel, but then again, I start looking at 1/2, and will do what it takes if it hits 1/4, especially during winter. Ever been stranded in a heavy snow fall? I have and having enough fuel to keep me warm is priceless. You never know what is around the next curve, and if you will be stuck somewhere, maybe just stuck in traffic for a few hours. My guess is the OP will now plan their trip including fuel stops.
