GSRA wouldn't bring me diesel!
This happened a few weeks ago on the Sunday before Christmas. I was with my wife an our two young sons on our way to a campground near tampa bay. We were in our "new to us" 2004 chevy Silverado, diesel, towing a 35 ft 5th wheel. This was our first trip in the truck, we had bought it a few weeks before the trip.
So the fuel light comes on, I look at the range meter and it tells me I have 40 miles left. We are on I75 near gainsville. I start looking for gas stations at the exits and don't see any truck stops so I can easily manoeuvre in the station. We go up a slight grade and run out of fuel.
I call GSRA and ask to have fuel delivered. They say 45 min. No problem. I didn't know exactly where I was, but I gave them my gps coordinates and from that they said it looks like I an at this exit, which seemed right looking at my surroundings
We were on the right shoulder and traffic was moving fast so we get out of the truck and go wait on the large shoulder. We are about 1/2 mile from the last exit, so we walk back to see if there is a gas station. I buy a gas can and fill it with diesel.
We walk back, and I get a call from GSRA. They say that they won't deliver fuel because it is a diesel,so it needs to go to a mechanic to prime the fuel system. They offer to tow the truck and trailer to a mechanic (on a Sunday?). I guess I was a little pissed at that, and perhaps feeling stupid for running out of fuel, so I said to the operator she should relay the message "screw them" to the tow company. I put the diesel in, watched a two minute video on my phone about how to prime the fuel system, and I start the truck.
I guess technically they did their job as they did offer to tow me. This is just a heads up that they won't deliver diesel
