Help with Canadian Insurance problem

On our way south for the winter we were hit on interstate seventy five The fifth wheel had a lot of exterior damage but the truck was fine.(we continued to Florida) We are now in the process of having the repair done.(the repair will done in the US)
We were in for a shock. My insurance company tells me we are not covered for a hotel while the repair is being done.(Ontario auto insurance does not cover living expenses in a situation like this, they are deemed secondary expenses) I was under the impression that a home is a home is a home.(it's our primary home for three months). It's only three nights at this point) but my fear is in the future if we get into this situation and the repair takes much longer and we are far from home it could cause a financial hardship. We were hit in Tennessee and I was told that if at that point I wasn't able to continue to my destination I was responsible for the hotel while the repair was being done.
Has any one been in this situation.
Living expenses are not covered under the auto part of my policy.
The fifth wheel is not covered under the homeowner side of my policy.
Fifth wheel has no engine but it is under the rules of the truck.
Any thoughts?

  • I sure hope Camping World is not doing the repairs! If they are, you better rent an apartment for at least 6 months!!!!!!!!!!

Tried sending you a private message outlining our experience. Too bad you don't accept P.M. Good luck with your situation.

You made the same mistake a lot of insurance policy holders make: not understanding what the policies actually cover or not cover and assumed too much.

Lesson learned, move on, try to find the coverage you are looking for. If that particular coverage is not available to you, you just have to assume the risk, be better prepared to cover the costs out of your own pocket, or change what you are now doing. What if you were in an accident that wasn't your fault and the other person had no insurance at all? There are thousands of illegals driving here in the U.S. without auto insurance.
  • They've said they will cover it if I keep it within reason. Like I said I've posted this to give every one heads up. On Dec twenty seventh on the side of interstate seventy five the last thing I was thinking about was about having the finances to cover a hotel stay for an unspecified number of nights. I felt my insurance would take care of it no matter who was at fault.
I just assumed my insurance would replace my temporary home while
    repairs were being done.
I've spoken to a lot of Canadians in our Florida park and they all felt the way I did.
The other driver was American and it took a couple of weeks with the holidays to get answer to see if they would accept the liability. If I had needed that repair in that period of time I would have paid for the living expenses.
The other insurance was asked if they would pay for my hotel. They could have said no.My insurance would not have paid if the situation was reversed

No riders in Ontario I've already asked. I've asked them to send me the fine print on the fifth wheel and they weren't able to..They were able to send me the fine print in the auto policy and the fine print in the home owner policy but the fifth is not in either. it's only three nights hotel but since the accident was not our fault it doesn't seem fair.

I posted this so every one who felt their insurance would cover all expenses, should have a back up plan if they travel far from home.

If not your fault go to the other guys insurance company. OR JUDGE JUDY

  • This is a good lesson for all of us. Read the fine print BEFORE you leave. There may be riders available that would cover situations like this.
