Highways Magazine

Just want to post my displeasure with the dropping of the Highways magazine. This was one of the main reasons I kept my Good Sam membership.. I will seriously reconsider this at this point. What is even more interesting is that because I already get Motorhome you will stick an insert in it but if I did not get it you would give it to me for free?? What's up with that? Let's penalize those who are paying for the magazine already??? I have a feeling you will need to reconsider this decision as I believe others will have the same issues with this decision.

  • I was in shock, when I read your editorial last night.

I look forward to my highway magazine each month. This is not only a "club" resource, but provides me and my wife information that I would not find in Motorhome and/or other "camping" magazines which really don't exist.

I tend to agree that there are way to many "camping world" ads. If anything, you should allow your competition to purchase ads so that we know what the competition is.

I am also confused by what is meant with "4" magazines each year.

Please reconsider and since this is a club, lets allow us to vote on such issues.
  • Some times you can find the Trailer Life & Motorhome magazine subscription for $4.99/year,with up to a 3 year option through a lot of the discount magazine subscription sites. That's where I got mine.
  • I think it is a good change. We will still get the Good Sam news on a quarterly basis and those who do not subscribe to Motorhome or Trailer Life will also get the magazine of their choice quarterly. Those of us who do subscribe to Motorhome or Trailer Life will have our subscriptions adjusted.

Seems to me Good Sam is being very fair.
  • The Highways magazine change-over is quite like the arrangement that the Academy of Model Aeronautics had with American Airplane Modeler magazine in the 70's. AAM was a for-profit magazine that included an insert done by the AMA as their newsletter. I was just a high-schooler at the time so I didn't think about fussy business or politic details, but the arrangement seemed to work well enough to allow the AMA to distribute a dozen pages of organization news without having to directly shoulder distribution costs.

This change should be a good way for the GSC to focus on organizational priorities while controlling costs.
  • I'd be happy if my subscription to TL is extended. I am currently paid up until 2016. 3 more years at 4 free issues per year would be another year or so added to my paid subscription....fair is fair if you are giving it away. Not sure if it will be worth renewing if I can get 4 free issues per year.
  • I'm looking forward to getting TL with a GS insert, seems like an improvement to me. I understand how those of you who already pay for TL or MH would feel, though. Maybe they'll do something to help you folks.
  • Where does it say that the 4 free issue benefit is for new subscribers only?

I will wait and see. He said that they will adjust for those that already subscribe to the magazine. I don't like to jump to conclusions. I think they are trying. I thought he gave a pretty good explanation. I read it over several times. Last month I called them and switched from Trailer Life to Motor Home magazine. This month I got both. I thought that was extra effort on their part. I'll wait and see.

Don't misread this. I hate CW. I do subscribe to GS insurance through
GMAC, & GS road service. I really think they are trying to address some long term issues. I say give them a chance. If it doesn't work out I'll be on here complaining just like I complain about CW and their high prices.

I'm on the same road as you...with the exception of the Motorhome. As I get Trailer Life.

From the sounds of things around here GS/CW would be better off cleaning house at a few dealerships around the country to save some coin. It seems that most of the issues surround a few dealerships.
  • I think it's a good idea. Highways magazine is only being published four times a year anyway. By incorporating it into either Motorhome and Trailerlife those of us who receive one of those magazines will still get the Highways insert four times a year and those who don't subscribe may be encouraged to subscribe after reading an issue of the magazine. Besides, for the past year this forum has been flooded with complaints from those who felt the highways magazine had too much advertising. They obviously have no idea of the cost involved in publishing a magazine and how heavily the publishers rely on advertising dollars. The way I look at it, the complainers got just what they were asking for. Now they will have to find something new to complain about. But, I'm confident it won't take them very long.
