Just some things that may have affected your experience:
Some insurances require anyone living in the home to be named on the insurance. Even a roommate and certainly a child. This would have nothing to do with their having their own vehicle(s) and insurance.
Even with a replacement value based insurance, they may require purchase cost for their policies.
Trailer VINs are not as specific as a vehicle VIN. It is very unlikely to identify the model, length, etc. The best way to identify those is to use the actual purchase agreement.
There are different types of RV insurance. With most auto insurance companies, they offer the same options as with a straight vehicle. With RV specific companies, they will usually offer a "home-type" insurance that covers the RV contents as it is your home. The latter is usually more expensive.
With all that, I learned a long time ago that it is better to stick with a known agent who has proven their worth than to go with a new unknown company because it is cheaper or offers "expertise".
