Whenever we (the fire department) do a lock out, we always warn the car's owner of possible damage, and we try to unlock the passenger side first - so if there is damage, it is not done to the driver's side door.
As to "expecting" damage, I am not sure how to answer that. I guess my answer would be "yes, expect some damage", and if there isn't when the door is unlocked then everything is fine.
I have no idea how AAA and/or towing companies handle possible damaged doors from unlocking. Did the body shop say anything about the amount damage? That it was unusual? My is guess is that might help you decide how to proceed.
