I have to agree with several people who posted above. The problem with these rallies is that they are aimed at a generation that is now rapidly leaving the building. With all due respect, the demographic of RV'ers is getting older and if this industry is to survive it must welcome younger people to it.
Using myself as an example, I would pay NOT to see Wayne Newton and C+W music, in my view, should be used to punish bad children. There were virtually no activities at the Syracuse rally that appealed to anyone younger than 70.
A mass renewal of wedding vows?
Games in a warehouse?
Seminars from vendors?
Please! All wonderful events to someone but not to me and I am willing to bet thousands of other 'Me's' too.
Can we not have entertainment other than C+W or performers who were over the hill when Jack Benny died? How many younger RV'ers would have attended if there had been a known rock group from the 60's on stage for example?
Couldn't there have been a coordinated system of trollies picking up people and letting them off at various sites?
Why was there no real food concourse? How about inviting some of the touring "BBQ Rib" guys for example. Or Micky D's. Or Tim Hortons. Or any of the major foodies who maintain mobile facilities for just such an occasion.
Signage. There were few signs inside the rally site and almost none outside. Tourists need help finding what they are looking for and there was little enough signage.
Now let me be clear here. I am not criticising the wonderful people who put the Syracuse rally together. And I am certainly not criticising the volunteers who stood in the rain and the mud with smiles on their faces and helped whomever needed help. An event is only as strong as the volunteers who work at it and this event could not have been stronger. Each and every volunteer should be personally thanked by the Good Sam organization for their sterling efforts in the face of unbelievable adversity.
But having said that, it is clear that the entire Good Sam organization that ultimately is responsible for the quality of these rallies needs a good dose of professionalism when it comes to designing, arranging and operating one of these rallies. And the members of this organization deserve no less.
