In the '60s, my wife worked for Montgomery Ward in the billing department. She had a customer who refused to pay her bill. It seems she had come in and bought a rug on credit. Then she exchanged the rug for a different one that was the same price. She insisted that she didn't have to pay the bill for the first one, because she had returned it. DW couldn't make her understand that she still owed the money, because she still had merchandise of the same value as the return. Sounds like this is the same situation reversed.
I worked retail for 9 years and I saw people try to do this stuff all the time. But that doesn't make it right for the retailer to do it.
