My Experience with Good Sam Roadside Assistance

I have heard a lot of complaints about Good Sam Roadside assistance. Sometimes it may not work like you expect or as advertised. However, for us everything clicked and I want to thank all involved.

Our Motorhome died out on a lonely stretch of road in Utah, it was totally dead. Minutes of panic, miles of nothing. Luckily we had one bar of cell power if I stood in the right place. I called the number on the Good Sam Roadside Assistance card. Waited and waited, more minutes of panic, then someone answered...it was Destiny. We went through the basic troubleshooting questions. Then trying to identify where we were, finally found something sort of close to our location (couldn't ever find a mileage post). Destiny then took our number and said she would call back.

More waiting, a little more panic, then the call..having difficulty finding a wrecker large enough to pull our motorhome and a location that would work on it. Oh, and just to make it more difficult, we were pulling a trailer.

Finally found a wrecker (100 miles away) who would tow us. Also found a Ford garage (also 100 miles away) who would work on our MH. They could not pay to pull the trailer 100 miles as well, but the found a person in a small town about 15 miles away that was driving right by us to pickup a car. He agreed to stop on his way back and tow our trailer back to his lot while we we got our MH fixed. Everything clicked. Our trailer was picked up about 30 minutes before the big wrecker arrived to tow us. We got to the garage at about 7:00pm (the garage agreed to let us spend the night in the MH). They also would start work on our MH first thing in the morning.

The garage found the alternator was bad (worked when cold but died when it got warm). They worked hard to find a replacement and finally located one that could be expressed to the garage by 4:00pm. They agreed to stay late to make sure it was installed and everything working and we were back on the road by 6:30pm that evening.

So thanks to Destiny at Good Sam Roadside Assistance, Auto Farm Ford in Price Utah (great people), Ron with Bob's Auto Towing, and sorry don't remember the other wrecker company...but great guy who really knew his business.

Our heart felt thanks to everyone who helped get us back on the road.

  • Not a motorhome issue but we have our 2014 suburban on our vehicle list with Good Sam assistance. We had a dead battery at a hotel parking lot. I put a call in to Good Sam and a jump start was sent out and we were going in 20 minutes from the time of our call. Can't get much better than that.
    Thanks.

Maybe I I missed it but why was not towing your trailer included? Most of us are usually towing something. For me it's either our CRV on a Tow Dolly or a Trailer with my Trike and another Motorcycle on it.

So, does this mean if I'm towing my trailer behind us and have a breakdown that requires the Motor Home being towed that we are responsible for the cost of towing our trailer?
  • there all pretty good it all depends on the service person on the other end knowing there job.
  • Thanks for the "Great news!" I think this is the way roadside service is supposed to work.
  • Our only experience with GS roadside assistance was excellent also. 12/23/2016
  • You usually only hear about the times the towing experience failed. Thanks for posting about the successful one.
  • Thank you for the post Rolin. We appreciate you taking the time to provide the feedback. We'll be sure to pass this on to all involved in assisting you.

    Safe Travels!
