No praise this time!

We headed out of Wheatland at 8:30 – got about 15 miles when suddenly we started getting a white steam in the coach and then the smell…of antifreeze. Looking ahead there was a parking area to pull off in, which is what we did. I put in a call to Good Sam’s emergency road service – after ascertaining that we were in a ‘safe’ place he asked what the trouble was.
I stated that we were pretty certain it was a radiator hose, and that we have a chevy 454 engine. He repeated it back to me – put me on hold and then came back and said he would call back. He called back in about 5 minutes, saying that there was a ‘mobile mechanic’ coming to our aid, but it would be about 2 hours until he could get there.
OK, not a problem. Once again I said we had a Chevy 454 gas engine. He made sure to tell me that we would be responsible for parts and labor. We did NOT get a call from the mechanic.
After about an hour and forty-five minutes, the man showed up from Bosselman, Inc. He spent about 5 minutes looking at the engine, and removed the hose. He then said he did not have one of those with him. He went into Wheatland and got a new hose and about 45 minutes later he came back. He spent 15 minutes installing the new hose and putting antifreeze in our radiator.
He then presented us with a bill for $442.73. Now to me, that is just plain price gouging. He charged us $332.00 for LABOR that was no more than 30 mins tops. He charged us $79.32 for a radiator hose that you can buy at NAPA for $21.00…$6.35 for antifreeze, and $25.06 for tax. So far I have emailed Good Sam ERS twice telling them what happened and asking for an explanation. I believe I was over charged by at least $200.00, and who knows what they were billed!

  • I needed a roadside mechanic once. He had to drive 6 hours round trip. He charged a 2 hour minimum of about $200. He only did about an hour's work, but I wasn't upset about paying the $200. Roadside assistance covered the six hours of travel time.

Whats the point of GS service if you are paying for everything anyway? Does your membership just pay for them to call someone? Kinda lost here and you were not over charged, you were raped.

In this case GSERS pays for the mechanic's driving time to and from where you are.
If thats the case, then the labor rates for 30 minutes work is way up there.
  • I know there was discussion in other threads about a general charge for mounting a tire and etc. Isn't there a general charge that mechanics that work under the GSERS umbrella charge for a labor rate? Maybe have this info given to the customer ahead of time?

To the OP, did you get an estimate before letting him perform the work?

  • According to the membership brochure, you are only responsible for parts and labor. The cost of getting him there should be covered by GS I would imagine. Unless they include that as labor.

As far as the radiator hose goes, you may be able to get it at NAPA for $21, but who is to say they will get it at NAPA? I was once quoted $70 for a rotor. I can get two of them at Autozone for that amount. They are making money on the parts. Antifreeze was at least a decent price. I had a radiator replaced at a dealership once and I was charged more than 3-4 times that price. I would want an explanation and breakdown of the labor charge though. What was the hourly rate and how he came up to that price. As ScottG mentioned, what are you going to do when you are somewhere and don't know the best person to call?

I mentioned this in a post. If you had access to the internet, you could of tried a "Standby Sam". They might of could helped you out.
  • I agree the price was awfully steep but what can you do when your stuck.
Fortunately for every post like this there's 3 or 4 where a repair guy did a bang up job and was more than fair on the price.
Sorry you had to be the bad-story victim.
  • Just my experience of 18 years in transportation; it's normally $200 just to have someone show up on a road call. You paid him to show up. You paid him for his time to go get your parts and you paid him to install and do the work. Also probably paid "book rate" not actual time. As for the price of the parts, when your on the side of the road they are all expensive. It's always cheaper to repair it in the shop or even cheaper to do it yourself. Shop will not sell you parts at their cost as they have stocking and handling costs of their own.

Every job in a shop has a calculated time the repair should take and that's what the mechanic gets paid and you get billed. If the book says 1 hour and he does it in 30 minutes he get paid 1 hour and you will be billed for the hour. Likewise if it takes him an hour 15 min, he'll get paid the hour unless he can show the repair is more complicated.

Now was the road call fee included in the labor? Good Sam’s emergency road service might reimburse the road call portion.
  • Don't mobile repairmen charge from the time they leave the shop until the time they get back. Just asking having never used one.
