Several responses here suggested that running the main engine would charge up the batteries but for some reason you seem to have ignored that in your response.

You need to find that out so you will know for next time.

If the main engine does NOT charge the house batteries, something might be broken because on most large rigs, it DOES.

I think I even suggested that asking for help from fellow campers often is a really rewarding experience. But you seem to have ignored that too.

If you are going to ask a question or post a problem here, you should at least READ all of the responses.

So which service is it that you have, jollyrancher01? "Good Sam Roadside Assistance" or "Travel Assistance"?

Been thinking about this post for the last few days now, milling it over in my head. Living in Central Indiana pretty much all my life, I know how crazy things can get at the 500 race, Memorial Day week-end, and the camping, traffic, and all the stuff going on at the track (fun stuff and the illegal stuff), not to mention the increased heightened security that was going on then and there.

Put it all together, and I wonder if that was just one of those times and places that Good Sam Roadside Assistance felt they simply could not get into. Just passing through the gates, the service company probably would have had to pay astronomical fees, even if they were not staying. That's the only reason I can think of why they might not have come out.

Did anyone from GSRA ever get back with you or did you ever reach out to them again after posting here? It would be interesting to know why you were denied the service, other than the excuse, We can't do that.

About being female? (personally) it doesn't make any difference. If you are going to hang out on these forums, you can expect some tough criticism sometimes.

I don't think your situation had anything to do with being male or female, or 16 years old, or 66 years old either. I think it had everything to do with your lack of RV experience. Far too often, too many of these forum members have forgotten what it was like to be relative new to this life style. They sometimes forget all the blunders and stupid things they themselves did. They don't always admit they did the exact same thing going through a learning curve with their RV's.

You learned some important RV basics through all of this. And that is what really matters. Now that you have put your RV to the test, next time you'll know what to expect. I bet you'll watch your fuel consumption a bit closer (very basic stuff for all of us, but how many of us had the experience when we were new drivers that we ran our first car completely out of gas and was left stranded on the side of the road and had to call Dad to come with a gallon of gas!)..... Probably everyone! (I was 16 ... I remember that well!)

So now you know. You've got experience under your belt. Chalk this up and move forward! .... Yes!!!! Something else WILL happen that will throw you for a loop, at an unexpected, inconvenient time. The important thing is to simply work your way through it. Keep calm, keep your whits, and everything will work itself out ... eventually.

OK, here's the big question: could you start the engine? The main one, not the generator. If so, then that should have charged both your house and chassis batteries. The house batteries could have died if you have anything being run off of an inverter and your generator quit. There are other loads too (lighting, monitoring panels) that could have depleted the house batteries. I do not know for sure whether your slides are powered from your house batteries or your chassis batteries. On my class A they are powered from the chassis battery. If you operate the slides without the engine running you may not have enough reserve left to start it later.

The reason most consider your post to be a rant is because you don't seem to be very familiar with your systems and how they work. The picture your post painted in many readers mind was of someone who was camped out at a race and ran their fuel low enough for the generator to quit, and then expected an Emergency Road Service company to bring them fuel so they wouldn't be bothered by starting their main engine, pulling in the slides, leaving the action to refuel and then returning to their site. It's sorta like someone being stuck on an escalator. You shouldn't have to point out to them that they can also be used just like stairs should they stop moving.

Oh, I don't know about that. Where I work there are scores of people with more money than common sense.

I guess that all of the included motor home system manuals were in Sanskrit or some other undecipherable language?

If you take the original post at face value, the slides were out and could NOT be pulled back in.

While that is questionable, if it IS true the rig was NOT drivable, from both a safety and legality stand point. And then there is what damage might be done to the slides if bouncing down the road with them open.
