Not on Toll Highways

I may have missed this when I signed up for GSRA but who'd think? I just had a need for service while on I95 in Kennebunk, ME and was told by the GSRA service center that GSRA does not enter toll highways. For any service on a toll highway you are going to need a separate road service or flip the bill yourself. Why would I want to pay for two roadside services?

Would have thought a roadside service would be under contract with local providers. After all...what are the chances you'll be on a toll highway and need service?

Needless to say I just cancelled my GSRA.

  • I never knew this. So what good does it do the rest of us if Frank takes the subject off line?? Is that indeed GS policy or did the OP get someone who didn't know what they were doing?? I know some of these tow services will only take cash. I don't travel with enough money to pay out of pocket for an expensive tow. So what good does it do to have a road side service if they aren't there when you need them??

  • Interesting thread. I know that many private roadways require contracted companies to supply assistance to the nearest facility. But it brings up a thought: Many Indian reservations also have contracted service. While in Monument Valley on the beautiful, fantastic, dirt road I wondered who would come to save me or the others on the roadway when we got stuck in a pothole.
Can't blame GS, Coachnet, or AAA for this.
  • We needed a tow on the PA Turnpike years ago and called GS & AAA (We carry both) and were told the same thing. Called PENNDOT and they were there RIKKI-TIK to help-us. We submitted the charges to GS and were reimbursed.

Our son needed a tow recently while traveling on the Will Rogers Turnpike in Oklahoma. He got the same response from AAA. He called the turnpike authority and help arrived shortly. AAA reimbursed him for the charges.

Just the way it is on toll roads I guess.

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!:)
  • It's not Interstates, but Toll Roads and it has been the same on the Mass Pike (I-90) through MA. I don't have any recent experience but I have heard they are a little more lenient on this now.
  • Toll roads have contract tow trucks they rotate. I have seen before on this forum GS will reimburse you for the tow if you submit the towing bill to them. I would call and talk to a supervisor.
  • Might be a local "thing." I have had GS respond on an intestate in the past without question.
  • I can only speak for what Chicago used to be like.
ONLY the 'county' tow trucks were allowed on the toll roads.

And if it was a big crash needing more trucks? Only the ones approved/under contract to the city where allowed on to assist.

It's a state/county regulation not GS. Varies from state to state. County to county.

The smaller towns you are in the less likely you will find that only the county trucks are allowed. GS knows which ones they can enter or not.
