Obsolesence clause?

Have the motorhome in for some repairs, most covered by GS extended warranty. I have had some good luck with the plan in the past, but then again, our premium has gone to almost 2000 a year, so its not like we don't pay for the service.
So I get a call this morning and the repair shop tells me the part on a broken awning is obsolete, and GS will only cover a very small portion of the repair. So after paying 2000 a year, plus 500 deductible, plus about 1500-1800 for replacement and painting of the new entry door awning, I think maybe its time to look at other options.
Just think folks ought to know that if you have an older coach, ours is a 2006 Newmar Mountain Aire, that things are going to start going out and are no longer made, you are almost on your own, and not sure that is why I would by an extended warranty.
Will update after I read the "obsolescence clause" and run it by my attorney/brother.

  • You have a 10 year old RV. I bet over that 10 year period, you have paid about $10,000 in "extended warranty" premiums. I also bet during that same 10 year period, you did not have $10,000 in repairs, let alone the policy paying out that much.

You are almost always better not to buy an extended warranty. They are in business to make money, they collect more than they pay out. The odds are not in your favor.
  • Update I was contacted by a representative, and emailed a form to file an appeal of the claim payment. Once I get the RV back, and submit the appeal, I will update with how it has been handled. I will try to remain optimistic, and while I don't agree with the current situation, as they sell the product stating take it to the repair shop of your choice, and they handle the rest, and obviously there is an issue there, I hope it can be resolved.
  • I have had good luck by just contacting the parts dept at the manufacturer.
  • For the amount you paid in premiums plus your deductible, you probably would have been better off not having any extended warranty. When an item reaches a certain age, certain types of service contracts, extended warranties, and insurances just aren't worth it any more.

My Springdale TT was only 6 years old, and I could not find a replacement for the outside shower that actually matched. Luckily, the dealership (service shop) guys were excellent and tracked one down for me at an RV salvage location. We did not have any kind of extended service, and because the part was needed replaced because of simple age and wear and tear, there was no insurance to claim either. But, they did replace it for me, all for around $100. I was VERY happy!

Sometimes, it's best to just keep your money and pay for a repair when it happens.

X1 :):) Extended warranties are life insurance, not much value until you need it but then it might be too late:):)
  • Hello RandandDoug,

Thank you for your time, I apologize for the issues you are having with getting the awning repaired on your 2006 Newmar Mountain Aire.
Can you provide a contact number and the name of the shop that you are working with in a private message and I will look into this.

    Thank you,
    Ella

  • Thanks for the info. I have found some awning parts to be obsolete. Lack of customre support is irritating.
