Paid for itself in 3 weeks...

I'm writing this message from the comfort of a hotel room while my RV sits out in the parking lot...

Bought my first RV about 3 weeks ago and was on day 2 of its maiden voyage. Unfortunately, about 15 miles from our destination, something strange happened with the transmission. While adjusting the air conditioner setting (of all things) the transmission just shifted itself into neutral. Moving the lever on the steering wheel did absolutely nothing to change it... revving the engine did nothing.

We coasted to a stop, fortunately with enough momentum to make the freeway offramp. Of course, shifting to Park was useless but parking brake at least kept us from rolling backwards.

First call I made was to Good Sam Roadside assistance. Unfortunately due to the date and hour, they were unable to get me a tow immediately, but tried tirelessly for an hour and called me back a few times with progress reports. Also authorized me to call and arrange my own if I could and would offer reimbursement.

Unfortunately the tow couldn't get us into the campground we had reserved so we're in a hotel for a few nights to sort out what to do next (warranty better cover this!) and Good Sam has already promised another tow on Monday.

  • Also if you have the luxury of planning your breakdown, do it during business hours Monday thru Saturday. ;)
  • Quick update. Called good Sam Monday am for tow from "safe" spot I got to Saturday night to nearest repair facility. Good good time estimate and multiple follow up checks. Easy and painless. Also got assured I will be reimbursed for the Saturday night tow. I have nothing but great things to say about Good Sam throughout this entire event.

Also the repair shop has diagnosed the issue. The output bearing (connecting transmission to drive train) "disintegrated". Dealing with dealer's power train warranty coverage is not nearly as smooth as good Sam. :)
  • I appreciate your sense of adventurer. It is all about the vacation, so when things happen, go with the flow, and keep the sunny side up.
    Happy Trails.
  • I agree it could be something simple. If it is electrical in nature removing the negative chassis (engine starting) battery cable for a minute might let the transmission computer reset itself.
  • Sorry for the trouble, but glad you've gotten your money's worth from Good Sam. I'm betting the problem is something simple like a cable fell off the lever, and actual repairs will be both covered by the warranty and really, really cheap.
