Good Sam Charter Life Member. Many years with GS ERS and praised ERS whenever I had the chance. In 2009 I had a problem and submitted a request to Highways Action Line and eventually received a phone call from ERS trying to convince me I was unreasonable. The story as submitted to Action Line is recorded below.
I was returning from work camping job in Yellowstone NP when I had a tire going flat on I 80 in Wyoming. We were at a rest area and had poor cell service so it took a couple of calls to get the info I am sharing now. The person I talked with tried to sell me 2 new tires. I told him I needed the spare put on and possibly some air in the spare. I was told they would not bring air out (I did not believe this because all service trucks I have seen on the interstate have compressors). Again, wanted me to buy a tire (Good Year Marathon). I explained that my 5th wheel came with those tires and only lasted about 2 1/2 years and the replacements had been on about 5 years and I did not want the Good Year product. I was told it would be about 3 hours before someone could be out.
The next morning I looked for a tire store but did not find the one which directions were given so we continued on hoping to make it to a larger town in Nebraska to have the nail hole repaired in the tire. The Marathon exploded about 30 miles from N. Platte, NE and again we had to call Good Sam ERS. I agreed this time to take a Marathon tire thru Good Sam because I was told they had special deal with Good Year for the amount of $238.12. When the technician came he agreed to repair the tire with the nail, also. When it was aired up, I noticed that there was some separation of the tread on the edge possibly from traveling when the tire was losing air. I followed the technician back to the tire store and agreed to purchase another Marathon because it was the only trailer tire they kept in stock. They did some additional work putting the two new tires on my aluminum wheels and the other rear tire on the steel wheel (spare) and imagine my suprise when the total charge was only $126.62. $111.50 less than the Good Sam ERS for the other tire just like it.
.
I feel like Good Sam ERS overcharged me by at least $111.50. I don't expect this to be published. A reimbursement would be nice but I have marked this up to experience just like I did the 1st set of Marathons which will now get another test but not because I wanted them.
