Premium increases

Have motorhome and 3 cars insured through National General. In 2015, with no coverage changes and no traffic violations, total price went up 25%. This year with no coverage changes and one red light violation, price is up 23% (10% for motorhome and 31% for each car). While the cost of living is supposedly up 2% per year! Anybody know if these increases are industry-wide, or just a feature of National General?

  • OP reporting back with results, summary first followed by details. After getting a couple of other quotes I remained with the Good Sam agency, keeping the RV with National General and switching the cars from National General to Progressive. The overall 23.3% increase was reduced to 7.2%. The Good Sam sales rep on the other end of the phone was great to work with and completely knowledgeable. He gets an easy "10" rating from me.

Details: The 23+% increase was just a general increase. Nothing about the coverage or drivers, including the single traffic violation, factored into it. The cars had the biggest increase, over 30%, while to motorhome increase was "only" 9.7%. The two other quotes I received were very close, price-wise, to the final solution with Good Sam, with the lowest being $41 per year less.

The insurance increases are hitting everywhere. In addition to the vehicle increase, our dental insurance had a 38% rate increase this year, and along with everybody else our medical rates have been skyrocketing.
  • Free enterprise system at work. They see you as an increased risk and increased the premium.
Without getting into what happened or guilt I think most who read this will agree, those who take risks should pay increased premiums. You were charged and pled guilty or were convicted of running a red light. Risky behavior increased premium.
As for the year before; did you go through an age increase? Change of marital status? Move to a different zip code? get a different vehicle? even having an adult child move back into the house? They can all affect your premium. Or there may have been a general increase for all insureds in your state. It could even be related to the state you live in the company may see an increased risk with the new marijuana laws in the area (risky behavior again)
  • Shop around. You might do much better with a sticks and bricks insuror like State farm or Farm Bureau.
  • safeco raised mine rates, no claims or accidents for 70 years but still they went up, so I upped my options, I changed companies, rate went down quite a bit. I have two insurance guys, retired, in the family and they told me a long time ago how to keep premiums down. I just followed their advice.
