Also an option to add towing reimbursement insurance to most vehicle policies for a few $$.

Actually I have been near disabled a few other times too. Have changed at least 3 tires, start battery, and alternator on the road. Tow was a fuel pump. Of course if a person cannot or does not want to deal with these issues more calls may be required. Big rigs might cost a bit more. I prefer to only insure the big stuff. Less than $2,500 is just maintenance on the road not a disaster. Everyone needs to know their comfort zone and pay accordingly.

You need not only to compare the $Price$ of your Road Side plan but also the actual services provided and but what is not covered. i.e. is there a limit to the milage distance your vechicle will be towed, will they tow you to a service center that has the capabilities to fix your RV or will they just drop you off at the nearest service center?

My insurance company pays for towing also... $100 max.

Why did you keep them if your dad had a nightmare experience a few years ago? Seems like that would be the impetus to find a different option.
I could self insure for a lot of risks, but I don't. I could easily afford to replace my vehicles but still carry collision and comprehensive coverage. I would much rather pay $1000 a year for 30 years and never have a claim than have to pull out $50,000 because I got a bit lazy and left the pickup outside in a storm and it got crushed by a falling tree. In roadside assistance, I am sure the costs of service has extreme variations depending upon location, situation and type of vehicle being assisted. If you have a Class B with a flat near a town or city it is probably a low cost call.
If your Class A diesel pusher towing a car hauler has the engine seize in the middle of nowhere, the tow is going to be very expensive. Insurance is always a net loser for the entire insured pool, but you aren't insuring the pool, you are only insuring yourself. There is a cost to mitigating risk, and for roadside assistance cost is the premiums. Only you and your personal situation will tell if it is a good or bad decision.
As for closing threads, if it hasn't been active for a few days, what difference does it make if it gets closed? I suspect they close threads relating to Good Sam business entities because they monitor and respond to questions and comments, just like they promise. Closing threads that have become inactive give them many fewer threads to monitor, saving employee time. The fact they let them run at all, and only close and not delete them entirely, to me is proof they are not trying to hide.

I have been towed once in the last 10 years and it cost me $75 and that was 2 years ago. My truck insurance picked up the bill. Most policy's have RSA included or available at a small cost.

I think it's all about piece of mind - like any other insurance;

I went out West last Jan/Feb and I was glad to know that if I broke down in the
middle of nowhere and miles from the nearest town - then someone would be able
to help me. Okay you may wait a while but who cares at that point.

I once broke on the NJ Garden State Parkway - $675 to go 2 miles and then another $500 to get me home. I had breakdown service which covered me and
reimbursed me, So $107/year seems like a bargain.

Like any other insurance - seems expensive until you need it.
