RV Extended warranty

Just purchased a RV extened warranty plan thru the dealer, LAZYDAYS, when I bought my used 2012 Open Range. 5-year plan was very expensive but we felt like it was worth the money since hearing about how expensive repairs are.

Well, after first trip out both waste tank level indicators were faulty and the waste values on each were also most impossible to open and close..After repair at Camping World I was told that checking with the insurer COACH-Net that NONE of the repairs or replacements would be covered. So, I am now out a $550.00 bill and am starting to question the value of the policy itself. Plus, Camping World Service never called beforehand to tell me what my out of pocket costs would be but went ahead and repaired the unit. So, I am stuck with a bill that, if known, I would have shopped around for a competitive repair price before committing to the work.

Any suggestions

  • I would steer away from Good Sam ESP. They did not cover any of my repairs on my travel trailer. They said I had not maintained it well enough even after I sent them receipts and documentation. They use to be real good, but not anymore. I and the shop spent two days on the phone with them trying to get them to cover even part of the costs - no go. The shop said they are one of the worst insurance companies to deal with.
  • How much is your deductible? If 1K your not covered. Read and know your policy. Always get a quote and check for coverage. You must have signed a release for them to repair your rig. If not who authorized the repairs?
  • Did you get the Basic plan? Looking at their brochure, there's no little check mark in the Water/Waste Components section.

They appear to be uncovered in the Basic plan, and covered in the two higher plans.
  • Every policy has limits on coverage. Tank gauges are notorious for not reading correctly if the sensors are inside of the tanks. One small debris piece gives you a false reading. This will likely be a recurring issue................most of us ignore the gauges and figure out how often we need to dump.

Sticking dump gates and be solved with some cleaning, a little lubricant or by replacing depending upon how bad. Replacement of the waste gates are covered by some policies and not others.

Yes, the policies can be very expensive but some of us are not "handy". I have had three extended repair policies now and have come out way ahead on two.

Coverage varies significantly by provider and you must know what is covered and ALWAYS get approval before any repair work is done. Sometimes the insurer will send someone out to verify the issue on a large repair. For me, I LIKE knowing I am covered if a large repair comes up. Has worked for me thus far. Others will never buy such a policy.

Hopefully you can have many trouble free adventures ahead! Best of luck.
  • Are extended warrantee's expensive? Well let me put it this way. I recently spent about $13000 for a trailer. I financed it for a 10-year period. The dealer offered me an extended warrantee that would add "only" $30 per month to my payment. When I immediately told the finance guy that I wasn't interested in a warrantee that was going to cost me $3600 he looked surprised.

  • I would see if it's possible to cancel your policy and get some of your money back. Probably not but, it's worth checking.

Also, read your policy, the whole thing, and see the exceptions or what is not covered.
You may be in for a surprise.

I hope you have many trouble free years in your Open Range. Enjoy your travels.
  • Sorry to hear about your all too common experience with your extended warranty...

    No comment about Camping World.
But, you post about, "Not Covered," should be a sticky that anyone who inquires here on the Forum about these extended service plans could refer to...

I have always felt that they are a looser for the customer and a big winner for the company.
  • yes, next time call the extended warranty co. to see if repair will be covered and second ask the CW for a quote only.
