RV Insurance for shor-timers (foreign driver)

Good morning everyone,
My situation is different to any other you might have read in this forum.

I'm an internatiomal driver, from Spain, with a Florida Motorhome Class A. As international driver I'm considered as a New Driver, which makes me to pay +1700$/year at any Insurance company.

Im actually insured by Progressive, paying 1750/year when I really use my motorhome no more than 120 days/year. So I have several questions.

1) Is there any RV Insurance that I pay-per-month of use? Rest of the days is always parked at a Storage, but not always in the same State.
2) Is there any Insurance company that I can have Storage Mode and save money during the months I don't drive it?
3) Does anyone know of a company specliazed in Internation Drivers?

I'm trying to get Florida Driver License but since I don't have SSN is almost impossible to me. Remember I live in Spain.

Can someone help me with this, please?

Thanks,
Fernando

  • I believe the insurance offered through the Good Sam Club has a feature that allows you to suspend your liability and collision insurance during times of nonuse.
  • Check with this camping club, Escapees.com they might be able to recommend another insurance company. Also the states have different requirements, depending on how much money the insurance companies paid the people writing the laws. In some states, the state requires special insurance for those who have not had insurance for the past year be 'assigned risk'. This prevents people from signing up for insurance, and not making any other payments, just to have coverage while getting the car registered.

Other states do not have a "Assigned risk" requirement for newly insured drivers. Besides, you are dropping "Progressive" to get another brand of insurance, and some insurance companies will not ask how long you have had your Florida drivers license, or how many years you have been with Progressive, just that you are currently insured, and want to get a better price quote.

Another tip. If you will not be driving the coach for several days or weeks, you might consider 'suspending' your liability coverage for that timeframe. So if the RV will be PARKED, and not driven, you can suspend coverage, and reduce the rates a lot. You should not suspend the fire, theft, and other coverages during the time the liability coverage is suspended. Normally I leave a tag on the steering wheel while it is suspended, so I am reminded to call my insurance agent before driving my motorhome. I only need the liability coverage the week or so that I am on vacation. THe fire and theft coverage is for the remaining time of the year, and only runs a few dollars. .

    Have fun!

    Fred.
