Tow distance limits

Recently had a tow for my tow vehicle only. In town. Distance was 10 miles to the shop I have maintain the truck. I was informed the limit for the tow is only 2 (two) miles. I was charged an additional $46 for the additional distance, which I did pay. However, I am now shopping for an alternative to Good Sam when my duration is up. I had no idea that Good Sam's limit is 2 miles. Glad I wasn't out on the highway somewhere. 2 miles in the city is ridiculous in my opinion. I could understand 25 miles perhaps. Anxious to see how Good Sam personnel respond. I was patient about the wait of about 3 hours. Not happy he had his girlfriend with him and wonder if Covid was just the excuse he used as to why I was unable to ride with him.
  • I had my truck towed once due to a driveshaft bearing failure. The driver told me that 10 miles to the Ford dealer was acceptable even though he drove past 4 other shops that could do it. Maybe I got a break because I am local and live in a small town. His total trip from HIS lot to my house, the Ford dealer and back to his place was 19 miles.

If you think that $46.00 was excessive, consider it costs $35-100+ just for a hook-up fee. So, without GS, that price could have been pushing $200.00.
  • Hello Notthru2,

Thank you for your post. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. It is listed in the member benefit brochure that we tow you to the nearest repair facility and if you wanted it towed elsewhere you are responsible for the over mileage. If you would like to speak with us more, please send us a PM containing your membership details.

    Thank you,
    Melissa

The limit, per se, is not 2 miles. GSRA once towed my motorhome 80 miles.

This is a quote from their brochure:
"Good Sam Roadside Assistance pays 100% of the towing fees for the delivery of your vehicle to the nearest professional service center capable and willing to repair your vehicle."

Key point...they do and pay for unlimited towing to the **nearest facility**. You don't get to choose the facility. I bet the nearest service center was 2 miles away.

We had a alternator fail and needed a tow and wanted it to a Ford dealer cost and extra $7.50
  • When I had GS they once towed my DP a good 80 mi free. Another time they couldn't find a truck large enough so I found one and paid myself.
  • Two miles is close to useless but it’s in the agreement. Six bucks a mile isn’t bad.

  • What did he do, make you ride in your own truck while it was under tow? :o
