Trip Planner- safe route?

I used the trip planner to plan a trip from Northern Ohio to Topton, NC. It routed us down Rt 129 from Knoxville to Topton. Having never been in this area, I didn't think anything of it. When we came through this area Sunday night around 11:00, we started seeing signs prohibiting any trailer over 30'. We are under 30', so I wasn't too concerned, but started having those strange nagging feelings. We soon discovered we were entering the famous "Tail of the Dragon" road. At this point we were committed- no place to turn our rig around. We did make it through, but it is definitely a trip I don't want to take again. I guess the question is, are there other "got 'cha" areas in trip planner? How do we know without being familiar with an area ahead of time?

  • Be glad you came through there at 11pm and not 11am on Sunday. That would of been a whole different experience. That is an awesome motorcycle road, although some so called bikers think they own the road, and a few every week pay the price. They even have "The tree of shame" to hang the parts of your wrecked bike on.

But I agree with you,it should not come up on the trip planner for towing a trailer. I wouldn't take my car on that road.
  • I use both Google Maps and Good Sam Trip planner for the perfect route planning. What the Goodsam Trip planner brings to the table is its integration with partner Garmin's routing software and that products knowledge of truck/RV road restrictions. My method goes like this:

RVParkReviews and Google Step - First I start with rvparkreviews.com to pick my most likely stops for the trip (i.e. miles between, review rating etc.). When I get the right park, I paste the address into Google Maps and I just keeping repeating the process as I build out the trip. The Google Map strength is the ability to zoom down on satellite view and street view and see exactly where I'm going.

Goodsam Trip Planner Step -Next, I start a new trip in the GS Planner and paste in each of the park stops I planned in step one. Because GS partners with Garmin, the GS Planner will expose any low underpasses, tunnel restrictions, etc. A good example is our current planned trip that includes a route from Mystic Connecticut to Liberty Harbor RV in New Jersey. GS Planner showed me that Google had me on a bridge that doesn't allow RV's, a tunnel where RV's are prohibited, and a section of freeway for car's only. GS Planner allows you to drag points to force a routing around those trouble spots.

Google Maps Revisioning - Next I go back over to the Google Maps tab and make the same re-routes that GS Trip Planner/Garmin indicated. I use the zoom and street view to check out the new routes and in the example of my trip to Jersey/NYC, I used street view to drive the freeway to see what my exits and city street turns look like.

Google Maps Revisioning - Once your google map is set, choose the option to send to your mobile phone then you'll see an option to also email the map to yourself. I do both phone and email. While traveling if I click the phone message, it brings up Google Maps mobile (map and directions). If we are hotspotting the cell phone, we can go into email and click the map link for a bigger screen view.
  • There are apps & GPS programs specific for truckers and RV'ers to use for trip planning. These will show pertinent information like overpass heights, grades, best route...etc.
  • When in doubt I usually 'fly' the route on GoogleEarth. I kinda like to know what the road looks like ahead of time. TripPlanner & GoogleEarth are a great team. I also believe in good old paper maps. JM2¢ ~~ MMV
  • K_and_I,

Some of the perks of the Good Sam Trip Planner include: point to point trip planning, able to add Good Sam Parks to your route, and shows low clearance and tunnel warnings.

    Thanks,

  • I thought that was the point of using GS trip planner- it's supposed to have those areas marked to avoid. If I have to go through all of the other options, what is the purpose of trip planner?
  • I always look at where I'm going on Google maps. You can see clearly that 129 has all the turns they advertise, 318 curves in 11 miles. I have even checked out gas stations with street view and seen that they were some sketchy looking areas. Have to do your homework.
  • K_and_I,

Thank you for contacting Good Sam. I am sorry to hear about your experience, but appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback. If you are unsure about a route, you can always reach out to the State Highway Patrol for the area to make sure the route you plan on traveling is safe.

    Thanks,
