What happens to people & pets when vehicle needs towing?

I had possession of my brand new RV for half a day before it broke down and needed towing. It took about 5 hours for the tow vehicle to show up. The vehicle was blocking the road but a very good samaratan with a truck and strap pulled me off to the side of the road. The problem was with the fuel lines- gas was leaking out onto the road so running the generator for AC wasn't possible. I was alone at the time and about 3/4 mile from my storage garage so the good samaratan also gave me a ride back to my car. But now I am worried about what happens when multiple people (and pets) are far from home with no toad and this happens. How do they get out of the sun and to some place where they can rent a car, get a hotel room etc. How does my platinum plus membership help this part of the problem?

  • When we were towed we rode in the tow truck but the 2 cats rode in the RV. They weren't too happy about it but they survived just fine.
  • Thank for the post MobileBasset. If you called for assistance with your family or pet(s) with you we would assist in finding or coordinating transportation for both. In some cases a provider will have room for more than one passenger when towing but most tow trucks only have a single passenger seat. In addition most providers will not tow a vehicle with a pet inside due to liability issues. • The ONE time this happened to me was when I was not towing a car behind the motorhome. I was able to get to the parking lot of a shopping center. I called CoachNet and they determined I needed a tow. I walked over to a nearby auto dealership that rented cars. By the time I'd got the car rented and was driving back to get my wife and 2 kids, the HUGE tow truck had come, had the RV hooked up, and was driving away leaving my wife & kids in the center of the parking lot. Fortunately I was right there to pick them up and follow the tow truck to a truck dealership certified to work on my chassis (about 80 miles away). After that, I got our CRV hooked up to tow.

Oh....it wasn't quite as dramatic as it sounds - I was in constant 2-way radio contact with my wife & kids so while I was renting the car they were keeping me current on the tow truck. We still tell the story - one of our vivid RV memories!
  • I rarely if ever leave on any trip with out the toad. If I do, only within a few hours of an extended support team eg kids, friends, someone who could come get us.

Not to mention, calling a cab to come get us and take us to a car rental; whip out the credit cards.

On the way to my dads funeral, our toad was rear ended so bad we had to leave it; did the rest of the trip no toad. Gave me thought to never doing that again. It can happen where you don't have cell service.

No guarantees in life. Sometimes you might have to get the ice out, douse some towels with ice water, sit back and make the most out of it.

    Worst things can happen.
  • We have to take care of and plan for those kinds of things our selves.
Cant count on ins. or any body else.
  • That is why I never move my MH unless the Jeep is hooked up. If you don't have a toad then you have to hope someone nice and willing to help shows up. That will not always happen.
