Canada Fishing

Want to plan a walleye fishing trip next year. We live in PA,would appreciate any campground within 12hrs from us. Will be camping in a truck camper, also would like to rent a boat. Thanks for any advice. Any suggestions on which month, avoiding the worst mosquito time, and which month may be best fishing?

  • If your planning on eating the fish you might Google this, I think you can find the manual on line.

Special advice for women of child-bearing age and children under 15

Women of child-bearing age and children under 15 are more sensitive to the effects of contaminants found in some sport fish. The Guide to Eating Ontario Sport Fish provides more stringent advice for this group (sensitive population).

    BOATsmart!® Exam

Need your boating license? If you operate any motorized recreational watercraft in Canada you are required to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card*, commonly known as a boat license. The Operator Card is required regardless of age, size of boat or engine horsepower. It's the law. Boaters obtain the official Transport Canada Pleasure Craft Operator Card by taking the BOATsmart!® Safe Boating Course and Boating License Exam online now.
  • I notice no one knows the cost of a non-resident fishing licence? Also no one mentioned we do have a boat operators licence, required to operate/rent a power boat. I don't know what the requirement is for visitors.
  • Wilkes-Barre to Québec City .. 11 hours. Best fishing is in the Saguenay, so add on another 3 hours.

Thanks im only an hour to new York on interstate 81. Would drive further than 12 hours if needed.Baskatong looks good ,will check them and a couple other lakes and campground websites. Will check out walleye central.

Being in northern PA along I-81 makes it an easy shot to many of the Quebec areas in 12 hours or so. You could get to Baskatong from there in about 9 hours and there are many others in range a little farther north in Quebec...

  • Here is one idea that is 12 hours from south-central PA. Not sure exactly where in PA you are. CLICK

This on the Baskatong Reservoir in Quebec. We go there almost every summer and you can rent boats there as well. Don't expect much from the campground but the main purpose to go there is fishing which is good on the large lake if you are willing to travel a bit to the more remote areas on the reservoir.

If you really want good walleye fishing, though, you can get daily or longer fly-out trips from several outfitters who will pick you up there. Not cheap, but its the best way to get into the really good fishing as well as a lot more of a wilderness feel.

The best time to go for walleye is June....as far as the bugs...well, you never know, esp with the skeeters...they can be bad or totally absent anytime of year but it depends on how wet it is where you are. Just get a good bug shirt.....chances are most of the time you won't need it (esp out on the water) but they are worth their weight in gold when you do...
  • Within 12 hours is going to limit you. Pickerel Park on Hay Bay of Lake Ontario. There are a few others there in that area. It's been awhile since I was in that area, so things may have changed. 12 hours are going to depend where you are in PA. Georgian Bay on Lake Huron may be within your range depending on where you are. You would also have some places on Lake Erie on the Canadian side, near Wheatley & Amhertsburg for the Western Basin of Erie. Another website, Walleye Central, may be a better resource for walleye fishing & campgrounds in their Canada section.
