Been to Mexico dozens of times as a tourist, but never as a snowbird. IMO people go there because it is cheap and if you have some money you can live large. There is simply way too much poverty for me to spend any real length of time in that country.
"The measure of a civilization is how it treats its weakest members." When I see dirt floors, impure water, windows with no glass, dirty faced children begging for money, and plumbing that can't handle TP the above quote comes to my mind. I have no desire to live/travel in a two class society.
Actually Mexico is not cheap. Fuel is higher, road tolls are higher. A decent Rv park will cost you $30 US a night. When you drive on the roads down there, you will see about the same proportion of newer vehicles as you do in the US. It has a rapidly growing middle class. I have been to Haiti, India, Pakistan, etc. Those are 3rd world countries, Mexico is not. Poor areas? Sure, but I have seen as bad inb Loiusiana & Georgia.
